For Dr. John Park, being an ophthalmologist is more than a profession. It is a way to give back and change lives. Since 2019, Dr. Park has dedicated part of his personal time to medical mission trips, traveling with his son Ryan to underserved regions of the world. Each trip is self-funded, from travel expenses to the surgical supplies and instruments needed for complex procedures. While some equipment is available locally, Dr. Park ensures that anything essential to deliver high-quality care is brought with him. He provides free surgeries to those in need and shares his expertise with local physicians and medical staff. By teaching surgical techniques, offering hands-on training, and guiding staff on best practices, he helps strengthen the skills of the local medical community so that care continues long after he and Ryan return home. Even during the years when international travel was not possible due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Park supported medical teams virtually, offering guidance and sharing his knowledge from afar.
Each trip is more than just medicine. It is about connection with people who have waited years for care and the chance to change their lives in a single moment. It is about restoring not only vision, but also dignity and hope, and giving patients the opportunity to see their families, their communities, and their futures more clearly. For Dr. Park, these missions are not an obligation. They are personal acts of love, faith, and gratitude.
Dr. Park’s first mission took him and Ryan to Uganda in 2019. There, he provided sight-restoring surgeries for patients who had no other access to treatment. This inaugural trip was the beginning of a lifelong commitment to making a difference through medicine and service.

After the pause caused by the pandemic, Dr. Park returned to the mission field in 2024 with Ryan by his side. This trip was especially memorable because of a young boy with cataracts. Dr. Park performed surgery that restored the child’s sight, an experience he later described as the highlight of the trip. While every patient’s restored vision is invaluable, giving sight back to a child who deserves to see the world at his age was the greatest reward. For Dr. Park, this single moment reaffirmed the purpose of his work and why he continues to dedicate his time and resources to these missions.

In 2025, Dr. Park and Ryan traveled to Ethiopia, where they once again combined surgical care with education and training for local doctors and staff. Each procedure not only restored vision but also created opportunities for lasting improvement in the community. By leaving behind knowledge and strengthened medical teams, Dr. Park ensured that the work would continue to benefit patients long after the mission ended

Dr. Park and Ryan plan to continue their global medical missions in the years ahead. Their work reflects not only medical expertise but also the deep personal values of family, service, and giving back. With each trip, they are reminded that while medicine restores vision, it is compassion that restores hope.
